This is an introductory course in the theory and practice of drama for the stage. Theatre will be explored philosophically and aesthetically, with the application of drama and instruction. Emphasis is placed on the understanding and application of social aspects of theatre in our world. In addition, by learning an understanding of acting techniques, this class is designed to help you develop communication skills and confidence that you can carry with you into everyday life when appearing before others, both personally and professionally. This course also uses fun and challenging physical and vocal exercises, games, creative work and various performance activities such as monologues and scene work.


COURSE OBJECTIVES:

- To be able to recognize and identify different eras and disciplines in theatre

- To be able to review and discuss the merits and faults of a theatrical production, to gain acquired knowledge of the art form

-To be able to demonstrate an understanding to theatrical eras along with individual projects

- To read and analyze theatrical works regarding their historical significance, as well as their ability to be performed on stage

- To be able to defend your opinions on theatrical works regarding their historical significance, as well as their ability to be performed on stage

- To understand the connection between theatre and film

- To gain knowledge of all forms of theatre, with an emphasis on acting

- To learn and use basic communication skills through acting

- To gain self-confidence in presenting yourself professionally and personally

- To develop an understanding of basic acting fundamentals and techniques

- To develop and sharpen concentration and focus

- To develop the ability to read and analyze plays

- To develop research skills necessary to create a character who may be from a different time, place, culture and lifestyle than the student

- To explore human expression enabling you to create and perform a character in a dramatic scene or monologue

- To develop a critical awareness of performance and develop oral and written critical skills for discussing performance
