I'm a pretty calm guy. I do lots of things, never seem to get too stressed about them, and I still find time to paint (and sell my paintings). It might looks like I'm someone who’s got it all together. One day, not so long ago, I was chatting with a friend when I heard myself admit I'd spent a lifetime struggling with anxiety.
It didn't seem like a big thing to say, but she was shocked.
She asked me: "How do you keep it together with everything going on? How do you deliver so much and seem so calm?"
I replied: "It wasn't always like this. I used to be on edge all the time. I was bullied at school for years,. My parents both came from tough backgrounds - they taught me to be hyper-vigilant because we didn’t really belong… I saw life as a never-ending sequence of the 'what-ifs.' Even when I was travelling the world as a ‘successful’ theatre director, there’d be days when I couldn’t walk into the theatre, couldn’t even get through the door……’
She asked the obvious question: "So, what's the secret? Magic?"
"No magic. Just learning how to be present," I replied.
Just saying it made it seem so clear and obvious.
So I decided to create a course to share what I mean by that - and how we can all get better at it!
