Chinese Calligraphy - New Year's Edition

Welcome to Our Free Calligraphy Course!

This course is filled with my best wishes to you for the years 2021-2025!

The years 2020-2022 may have been challenging for many of us, but as we step into the years ahead, I want to share happiness and positivity with you. In this course, I will teach you how to write the Chinese character "happiness" (福, pronounced "Fú") in five major calligraphy styles. Through this practice, you will not only learn to write your own happiness, but also share it with others, spreading love and joy through the beauty of calligraphy.

Let’s start this new year together, strong and inspired!

Course Overview

We will begin by understanding the structure and composition of the character ("happiness"). Then, we will practice writing it in five main calligraphy scripts, each representing a different era in history:

  1. Seal Script (篆书) – The oldest and most ancient style.

  2. Official Script (隶书) – A refined and structured style used in historical documents.

  3. Regular Script (楷书) – The standard and widely recognized form of Chinese calligraphy.

  4. Cursive Script (草书) – A flowing and expressive style.

  5. Semi-Cursive Script (行书) – A balanced form between structure and fluidity.

After practicing each script, we will write the character on presentation paper, creating a final piece that reflects your personal style and artistic growth.

Course Materials

  • A medium-to-large-sized brush

  • Rice paper (Xuan raw rice paper, 宣纸) – Preferred for its excellent ink absorption.

  • Ink – Either liquid ink or ink blocks.

If you don’t have a brush, feel free to be creative and use any available tools to practice!

Wishing you all the best,
Fiona
